Types of Primary Care Physicians

Board-certified internal medicine doctors (internists) care for adults age 18 and older. An internist is a good fit if you’re an adult with ongoing or complex health needs. They have advanced training in conditions such as heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes. As your health needs change with age, an internist can manage multiple conditions at once.  

Board-certified pediatricians care for children from birth to adolescence. They treat common and chronic childhood illnesses and health conditions.  

A pediatrician works closely with you to support your child’s health and well-being. Routine well-child visits provide age-appropriate vaccines, track your child’s growth, and address any concerns.  

Pediatricians coordinate care with specialists when needed. They also guide your child’s transition to a primary care doctor who cares for adults. 

Some doctors are board-certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics. Med-peds doctors care for all ages, from infants to seniors. They also have specialized training to care for children with complex health conditions that may continue into adulthood, such as cystic fibrosis and congenital heart disease.  

Board-certified family medicine physicians diagnose and treat common and chronic health conditions for all ages — infants, toddlers, adolescents, adults, and seniors.  

Family medicine doctors are a good choice if you want one doctor for your entire family.  

Adults age 65 and older can benefit from the expertise of board-certified geriatricians who manage chronic health conditions that come with aging.  

Geriatricians monitor risks for dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, evaluate mobility and fall risk, check bone and joint health, and review medications. They also provide guidance for caregivers of older adults.
